Ukrainian public organization "Ukrainian association of osteoporosis" was founded in 1996, since 1998 the association is part of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

Key objectives the association are solving urgent scientific and practical problems of health care associated with pathological conditions of bone and related systems; development of new methods of osteoporosis diagnostics, prevention and treatment, and implementing them into practice; enhancing education and training of the Association’s members and protection of their interests.

The Ukrainian association of osteoporosis brings together leading experts in various fields, all of them studying diseases of musculoskeletal system. Annual international scientific conferences and school-workshops are held to provide their participants with forum for discussion, opportunity to acquire new knowledge, exchange experience and ideas. In addition, members of the Ukrainian Association of osteoporosis actively participate in the international congresses and conferences of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases (ESCEO).

In 2014, at the Congress of WCO-IOF-ESCEO in Seville, president of the Ukrainian Association of osteoporosis, Professor Vladyslav Povoroznyuk was awarded a medal for his commitment to the activities of the IOF’s Committee of National Societies (CNS).

Over the recent decade, the Ukrainian association of osteoporosis published about 20 books, promoted a scientific journal "Problems of osteology” in 1999, and a specialized scientific journal "Pain. Joints. Spine" in 2011.

In 1999, assisted by the Ukrainian Association of osteoporosis (based at SI "D.F. Chebotarev Institute of Gerontology NAMS Ukraine") Ukrainian Scientific Medical Center of osteoporosis was founded. Today the center is actively providing diagnostic and consultative assistance to patients from various regions of Ukraine. Principal diseases treated at the center are systemic osteoporosis (primary and secondary) and its complications in children and adults, back pain, spinal degenerative diseases and their complications, post-replacement arthroplasty and vertebroplasty, rheumatic diseases, metabolic bone and muscle disorders, diagnosis and correction of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of sarcopenia and others.
